Dr Karen Yew

Dr Karen Yew is a Specialist GP in women's health. She graduated from the University of Queensland in 2012 and completed her general practice training in Rockhampton. She developed a passion for women's health whilst working in the Sunshine coast. There, she began to specialise in contraception, fertility and menstrual disorders. In recent years, she has become more interested in the management of menopause and the concept of healthy aging. Dr Karen has been an Australasian Menopause Society (AMS) member since 2022 and has attended every annual conference to keep abreast of the latest news. Dr Karen believes in listening to her patients and individualising healthcare to their needs. She is available for a full range of women's health procedures including Implanon insertions and removals, all types of IUD insertions and removals (including copper) and iron infusions.
In her free time, Dr Karen enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 young children. Originally from Singapore, she is fluent in Mandarin and is happy to consult in it.

Detailed Examination: Colposcopy provides a magnified view of cervical tissues, enabling a more in-depth examination. It is a crucial step in investigating abnormal Pap smear or HPV test results for early detection and prevention of cervical abnormalities or cancer.
Diagnosis and Biopsy: Dr. Torres may perform a biopsy during the colposcopy to accurately diagnose and assess any abnormalities.

Procedure Overview: Colposcopy is a relatively short procedure, usually taking about 20 to 30 minutes.
Comfortable Setting: The examination is performed in an office setting, often similar to a regular pelvic exam.
Magnification and Light: Dr. Torres uses a colposcope, which is a special magnifying instrument with a light source, to closely examine the cervix. The colposcope is the state-of-the-art equipment - HD Video Colposcope that allows the patient to visualize the examination.
Possible Biopsy: If any abnormalities are detected, Dr. Torres may take a small tissue sample (biopsy) for further analysis.

Post-Procedure Care: Most women can resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure. If biopsy taken, further care will be need and will be discussed with the patient.
Results and Follow-up: If needed, on a review appointment, Dr. Torres will discuss biopsy results with you and recommend any necessary follow-up steps based on the results.

Expertise: Dr. Michelle Torres has a PhD in oncology with her theses on cervical cancer. Dr. Torres has extensive experience in women’s health in 3 different countries: USA, Brazil and Australia. She was a Post Doc Fellow at the famous Mayo Clinic hospital where she performed outstanding research in gynaecological oncology and earned a Master’s degree in biomedical science and clinical and Translational Science. She finished her post graduate diploma in gynaecology in Brazil and she also performed a PhD in oncology focusing on cervical cancer and has 20 paper internationally. Dr. Torres is part of the Australian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology and of the Compassionate Care: Our approach is patient-centered, ensuring your comfort and understanding throughout the process.
